What is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a metabolic disorder that disrupts your hormones, typically giving you higher than normal levels of certain sex hormones and insulin. This hormonal imbalance results in symptoms such as irregular or no periods, acne, excess hair (Hirsutism), weight gain, male pattern baldness, thyroid problems, type 2 diabetes, fertility problems, sleep apnoea, and high blood pressure.

In addition to this those with PCOS may also have a number of cysts on their ovaries, these show on ultrasounds as dark blobs and are in fact empty egg follicles in a state of 'suspended animation', waiting for the right balance of sex hormones to come along and activate them.

The majority of women with PCOS start to notice symptoms in their late teens or twenties, this said some women may have had the condition since birth or even conception.

The condition is treatable but not curable.
